Our next contest will have a technique-oriented theme, rather than a subject-oriented theme as we have done to date.  This is the first in a series of  ‘technique themes” designed to focus on either how the photo is shot, or how the image is post-processed.

So get a head start before the contest is officially announced!

Our next theme will focus on High Dynamic Range shots.  There are a number of software solutions out there.  Since HDRSoft has a full trial version I recommend downloading it here.  The resulting image adds a watermark for trial versions of the software, but this is fine for submissions.

Prizes will include Photoshop and Photomatix Pro!

Popular Vote Complete

Our third contest has finally come to a close and the winners have been selected for the popular vote! Congratulations to 1st Place Jessica McDade, 2nd Place David Anjema , and 3rd Place Kim Cartledge. There were a lot of photos that had good activity from members.  I intend to open the voting module up permanently in the next contest or two so people can vote any time for all submissions, and see the overall scores via the developing Facebook App.

Thank again to everyone for your participation.  I’ll be sending our prizes to all the winners of “Faces”.  Stay tuned later this month for a new Contest Announcement!

Tallying the votes and reviewing images.  Will announce Top 3 early next week!  Thanks again everybody for the great turn out.  Another contest is coming soon!

The popular vote is a chance to pitch your submissions, rate other Thirsty Photographers’ photos, comment on your Favs, and see what feedback you get on your own photos. With so many submissions this contest I recommend we all try to vote and comment on at least 5 random photos.  In the future, this type of participation may be a requirement for eligibility in the contest – so its a good time to put your critique hat on and try it out!

The popular vote window is now open for 7 days after the Judging Panel has made their selection in the contest. The top 3 rated photos will move to the Showcase Album along with the top 3 photos selected by the Judges at the end of the Contest.

In order to qualify for placement in the top three, the submission must have a minimum of 15 votes. The best way to get votes is to vote for other submissions, and pitch your favorite photo on Facebook. For each photo, the “by-line” has a Share button. You can also use the Facebook App. This will allow you to post a link of your own photo (or your favorite photo ) to your news feed. Let friends know your in the contest and get them to participate – after all, its a popular vote so campaign for your favorite photo!

Accessing Photosfbphoto1

The Facebook App has been evolving, and can now be used as a way to quickly view your own photos and share them without leaving Facebook.  There are still some kinks to work out on the Facebook App, but try it out.  Some useful links

With well over 600 images to review the panel is winding down the review of images and we will be announcing the winners this weekend.  Stay tuned!

This contest is currently in the Judges voting phase.

Submissions closed on October 23rd, 2009, the contest now goes into the judging round in the Voting Window, where our three judges choose the top 3 photos first. The judging round is then followed up with a popular vote round from all our members.

adboe_hdriThe last two contests have been fairly wide open themes allowing for a lot of variation in submissions and interpretation.  This time the theme is a little more narrow, with a specific subject in mind – faces!  I decided on the theme to be “FACES” after my recent visit to the Avedon exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I’ve also been busy talking to sponsors and am happy to introduce HDRSoft ( http://www.hdrsoft.com/) to Thirsty Photo!  Sponsors like HDRSoft support this site by giving two products of Photomatix away this contest. So we should support them by clicking on their links and checking their site out! Help keep our sponsors happy by visiting them.

So before going further – click on the Photomatix Banner! I personally use Photomatix Pro for HDR processing and will do a post later this month on this useful piece of software.  Additionally, HDRSoft is also offering a 15% discount for all members of Thirsty Photo.  Simply use the coupon code “ThirstyPhoto”  when purchasing a license online.   The coupon has to be entered in the ‘Coupon Code’ field of the order form that shows after having clicked on one of the ‘Buy’ buttons of the purchase page of the HDRSoft website.  You can actually download a trial version here.

Contest Announcement September 20th, 2009 This contest is open to all eligible members of the Facebook Group ThirstyPhoto. If you would like to participate in this contest simply join our Facebook Group, Connect to the Site, and submit your photos!  Join the Facebook Event as well to keep informed during the Contest. This is a Category Assignment with a Judges Panel and a Popular Vote. This means that there will be a round of voting for the judges, they will select the judges’ top 3, and then the popular vote will be open for all members to choose the members’ top 3. Some useful links to get you started :

  1. How to Connect and Submit Photos (here)
  2. Basic Contest Rules (here)
  3. Using metadata before submitting to protect your ownership (here)
  4. How to post an image (here)
  5. Editing a photo once it is approved (here)

Other useful links worth reading about our site :

  • How voting works (here)

Submissions must have some form of interpretation of the Theme within the composition and description. With the theme this contest being ‘FACES’, there is some room for interpretation, but the focus should follow basic portraiture.  Take the opportunity (I know I will!) to research basic techniques around portraiture, creativity, and subject composition.  I’ll post information I find during my own research to share with members. All photo submissions must be taken by the submitter, who must retain full ownership of the photo. The submission must provide minimal EXIF information. Once your submission has been approved, you will have access to edit your Photo details.

Shane Liem won first place in our last contest from the Judging Panel! I thought it would be fun to have previous winners participate as a judge. The extent of her photo experience is in her own words,  “… I was the head photographer of yearbook and newspaper in my high school, I used to compete at the photojournalism competitions for high school students. I placed first place in San Joaquin County, 2nd place in State and 1st place in Nationals for the NJEA. I went to USC Film School and was studying to become a cinematographer but ended up working in casting on feature films for 6 years. Then I went into casting commercials, ran someone else’s company for 6 years and then started my own company about 5 years ago and have been very fortunate to be successful…” She started really shooting again in January of this year.   Here was her winning photo.

Don’t forget to visit our judges’ websites. Giving them traffic helps us attract professional photographers  and hopefully some valuable professional feedback on our work.

Judging Round Complete

Our second contest is coming  to a close and the winners have been selected for the judges round! Later this week, I will open up the contest to popular vote, where all of us can vote, promote your submission, and have another chance to win a copy of Adobe Lightroom.

Congratulations to 1st Place Shane Liem , 2nd Place Eric Thalman , and 3rd Place Matthew Asner. Shane will receive a copy of Adobe Lightroom for the first place prize from the judges panel.  There were twice as many photos submitted compared to our first contest for a total of 330 great shots!  This meant there were tons of great photos to review, and a tough choice to choose the top 3.

This was the first time ThirstyPhoto had a panel of judges.  I learned a few things along the way and got some good feedback on how to improve this part of a photo contest.  So stay tuned for more judging in future contests, and a bit more rules on how judging will be performed.  Overall, I think a panel of judges complements the popular vote, so its good to see the latest Poll reflecting this opinion from you all.

We have had a lot of great press this Contest, and I look forward to offering some new prizes in our next Contest.  So stayed tuned! And don’t forget to participate in the popular vote later this week!
